“The Peak of Good Living,” as Apex is known, was originally settled around 1867 and was the highest point on the Chatham Railroad between Richmond, VA and Jacksonville, FL. At that time, the town was an important shipping point for products such as turpentine, tar and lumber from the surrounding forestlands. Today, Apex makes a point to continue that historic feel, both in its historic residential district and downtown, where the recently renovated facades of buildings along Salem Street still reflect eras gone by.
